With the EOLIS wines, we invite you on a sensorial journey into the South East of Bulgaria, to discover this region rich in ancestral traditions and in natural beauty, where vines have been cultivated for more than 4,000 years.

With the placid waters of the Maritza river meandering through it, the Thracian Valley is related by its name and its historical legacy to the ancient Thracian people, who inhabited in the second millenium B.C. the lands north of the classical Greece. Skilled goldsmiths, the Thracians created extraordinary golden treasures. Proven winemakers, they had mastered the secrets of fine wines long before the Romans.

The EOLIS Estate is located near the village of Malko Gradishte in the Lyubimets PDO region, in the outskirts of the Eastern Rhodope mountains of the mythical poet Orpheus. Close to the vineyard, a Thracian religious and memorial service complex dating back to 2000 BC has been identified. Small niches carved into over 30-metre high boulders and a sanctuary seem to be evidence of a Thracian sun cult. There are two megaliths (of a rectangular form) on the site, which were used for the manufacture of sacred wine for the worship of the Greek God Dionysus.

At the junction of Bulgaria’s borders with Greece and Turkey, along the ancient trade route leading from Vienna to Constantinople, the picturesque landscapes of this wine region are still preserved from the modern civilization.

The project EOLIS began in 2005, when 8 wine grape varieties were replanted in an area of 2.2 hectares. The clay based soil allows to develop rich and complex wines. The climate is temperate continental with Mediterranean influence. The region, which lies at roughly the same latitude as Rome, is one of the sunniest in Bulgaria. However, the daily summer heat is attenuated by the refreshing caress of the Rhodope mountains breeze in the evening. The contrast between daily and nightly temperatures ensures perfect conditions for a slow and optimal grape maturation.

It is the harmony of the elements, Eole (wind) and Solis (sun), typical for the place, that gave birth to the name and symbol of EOLIS.

To extract the quintessence of this terroir, the swiss viticultural approach and modern winemaking experience have been applied to the establishment of the vineyard (plants selection, high-density planting, training method, etc.), to the grape growing practices (cutting, low-yield and maturity control, hand-harvesting, etc.) and to the winemaking process as well (fermentation control, aging in French oak barrels).

The wines EOLIS, coming exclusively from that vineyard, express the richness of this fascinating and unique terroir. They impress with their elegant and fruity character, with their intensity and complexity.

We invite you to discover them.
